Cameroon’s New Star Receives Special Recognition in Her Hometown.

Cameroon international Monique Ngock, who played a key role in the Indomitable Lionesses’ historic 2026 WAFCON triumph, has been named an Honorary Citizen of Mfou in recognition of her achievements on the continental stage. The honour was conferred by Mfou Mayor Francis Ngoumou during a ceremony attended by a large crowd in the Centre Region.

Ngock returned to Mfou following Cameroon’s historic victory in Morocco, bringing the WAFCON trophy back to the community where she grew up. The local authorities used the occasion to celebrate her journey from the town to the highest level of African women’s football.

From Mfou to the Top of Africa.

Mayor Francis Ngoumou described Ngock as an example of what young people from the community can achieve through discipline, hard work and determination. He emphasised that her success demonstrates that international sporting excellence can emerge from communities outside Cameroon’s major football centres.

The recognition comes after one of the most important tournaments of Ngock’s career. She was among the standout performers as Cameroon defeated Malawi 3–0 in the WAFCON final in Rabat on August 16, securing the country’s first-ever continental title in women’s football. President Paul Biya also singled out Ngock and other players during the presidential reception for the champions in Yaoundé.

A New Generation of Cameroonian Stars.

Ngock’s honour reflects how quickly the WAFCON victory has transformed the profile of the players who delivered it. The Lionesses have moved from being perennial contenders to continental champions, and individual players are now becoming symbols of achievement for their communities.

For Mfou, Ngock’s story carries an additional significance. Her journey demonstrates how local football development can produce players capable of reaching the highest level, while also giving young girls in the community a visible example of what a career in football can become.
