Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) Denounces Media Manipulation Sabotaging Eto’o’s FIFA Loyalty Stance.

The Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) has publicly come to the defence of its president, Samuel Eto’o, accusing social media platforms and some foreign media outlets of running what it describes as a coordinated campaign intended to damage his reputation. The intervention comes at a sensitive moment for Eto’o, whose increasingly visible support for Gianni Infantino ahead of the 2027 FIFA presidential election has placed him at the centre of a wider football power struggle.

In a statement dated September 15, FECAFOOT’s Executive Committee described the coverage as a campaign of denigration involving what it called unsubstantiated accusations, insinuations and attempts to manipulate public opinion. The federation said it was responding because the allegations were affecting both the image of its president and that of the institution he leads.

Why Eto’o’s FIFA Position Is Now Under Scrutiny.

Eto’o has made no secret of his support for Infantino as the FIFA president seeks another term. In an interview reported by Reuters earlier this month, the former Cameroon captain urged African football federations to support Infantino, arguing that his leadership had created greater opportunities for African football, particularly through the expansion of the World Cup.

One of the main points Eto’o highlighted was the expansion of the World Cup from 32 to 48 teams. Africa received nine direct qualification places for the 2026 tournament, compared with five at the 2022 World Cup, and Eto’o has presented that expansion as evidence of the benefits of Infantino’s leadership for the continent.

That position has become increasingly significant because Infantino is preparing to seek another term at the FIFA Congress scheduled for March 2027 in Rabat. Eto’o’s public support therefore places the FECAFOOT president directly inside an increasingly important international football debate.

FECAFOOT Says the Timing Is Not Accidental.

FECAFOOT’s Executive Committee has linked the recent attacks against Eto’o to his political position within international football, particularly his support for Infantino.

The federation says the allegations and negative reports have intensified around the same period that Eto’o has been speaking publicly about the future of FIFA and defending what he describes as African football’s interests. FECAFOOT therefore considers the timing significant and argues that some of the coverage is intended to undermine Eto’o rather than simply examine the issues being raised.

That is FECAFOOT’s interpretation of the situation, however, rather than an independently established explanation for why the reports have emerged.

The Russia-Cameroon Money Allegations Are Part of the Dispute.

One of the main issues driving the recent attention concerns money connected to the friendly match between Cameroon and Russia played in October 2023.

Former FECAFOOT officials have raised questions about more than €567,000 reportedly connected to appearance fees from the match. Al Jazeera reported that former federation executives accused Eto’o of redirecting the money to a personal account, allegations that FECAFOOT and Eto’o have disputed.

FECAFOOT’s latest statement does not accept those allegations as established facts. Instead, the federation characterises the reporting surrounding them as part of a broader campaign against its president.

The distinction is important because the existence of an allegation does not itself establish that wrongdoing occurred. The available reporting indicates that the financial questions remain contested rather than resolved by a final finding against Eto’o.

Eto’o Has Also Accused His Critics of a Coordinated Campaign.

The federation’s statement follows comments Eto’o himself made earlier in September.

In response to reports concerning the Russia-Cameroon match, Eto’o described what he saw as an “offensive” against him and connected the criticism to his positions on African football and his support for Infantino. He argued that several accusations were appearing simultaneously and suggested that the timing pointed to coordination among his critics.

FECAFOOT has now adopted a similar line, arguing that social media activity and coverage by certain foreign media outlets have combined to create what it describes as an organised campaign.

The federation has not publicly established who, specifically, it believes is coordinating such a campaign. Its statement instead focuses on defending Eto’o and challenging what it regards as unsupported claims.

There Are Still Unresolved Questions Around FECAFOOT.

While FECAFOOT is rejecting what it calls unsubstantiated accusations, there are also documented football-governance issues surrounding Eto’o that provide context to the current controversy.

In 2024, the CAF Disciplinary Board found that there was insufficient evidence to declare Eto’o guilty of match manipulation. The same decision, however, found him in breach of CAF ethical and sporting principles over a commercial agreement with a betting company and imposed a $200,000 fine.

More recently, two former FECAFOOT officials have reportedly submitted complaints to FIFA’s ethics structures concerning Eto’o, although there has been no publicly reported final decision on those complaints. The unresolved status of those matters means they should not be presented as findings of wrongdoing.

That distinction is increasingly important as the debate around Eto’o moves between allegations, media reports, institutional responses and formal football proceedings.

FIFA Is Entering Its Own Political Fight.

The controversy surrounding Eto’o is unfolding against a much larger dispute inside international football.

Infantino’s FIFA has recently faced opposition over the proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise, a plan that would have created a commercial structure allowing outside investors to acquire stakes connected to FIFA competitions. The proposal was withdrawn after significant opposition, including from European football authorities. FIFA said on September 16 that a review of the abandoned plan would be presented to its Council.

Eto’o’s support for Infantino therefore comes at a time when the FIFA president’s leadership is itself under intense scrutiny from sections of the international football community.

For African football officials, however, the argument can look different. Eto’o has stressed the importance of FIFA’s increased investment in African football and the greater representation created by the expanded World Cup.

What FECAFOOT Wants the Public to Focus On.

In its latest statement, FECAFOOT called on journalists, football stakeholders and social media users to rely on verifiable facts, credible sources and constructive debate. The federation also indicated that it could pursue appropriate action through competent bodies to protect the interests and image of the institution and its leadership.

That response effectively turns the dispute into two separate questions. The first concerns whether the allegations being circulated about Eto’o are supported by evidence. The second concerns whether those allegations are being amplified for reasons connected to his international football positions.

FECAFOOT is firmly advancing the second interpretation, particularly linking the controversy to Eto’o’s support for Infantino. Critics of Eto’o, meanwhile, have raised financial and governance questions that the federation says are being presented without sufficient evidence.

The FIFA Election Could Make the Dispute Bigger.

The timing means the controversy is unlikely to remain purely a Cameroon football story.

With the FIFA presidential election approaching in March 2027, African federation leaders will become increasingly important to the competing political blocs within world football. Eto’o’s public support for Infantino gives him a visible position in that contest, while FECAFOOT’s decision to defend that position demonstrates that the federation intends to stand behind its president.

For now, the federation’s message is clear: it rejects the recent accusations as a campaign of denigration and says the media narrative surrounding Eto’o is being manipulated. The allegations themselves remain contested, while the FIFA political position that has placed Eto’o under renewed scrutiny is publicly documented.
