Ivorian Legend Makes History in His First Senior Managerial Role.
Yaya Touré has made African football history after guiding Slovan Bratislava into the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League league phase. The Slovak champions defeated Slovenia’s NK Celje 2–1 after extra time on Wednesday night, completing a 3–2 aggregate victory in the final qualifying round.
The achievement is remarkable because Touré only took charge of Slovan Bratislava this summer. His first senior managerial appointment has now immediately placed him among the African coaches to have reached the highest level of European club football.
From African Superstar to European Coach.
Touré arrived at coaching with a reputation few African footballers can match. The former Ivory Coast captain enjoyed an extraordinary playing career with Barcelona and Manchester City, winning the UEFA Champions League with Barcelona in 2009 and multiple Premier League titles with City.
His transition into management, however, was expected to require patience. Before taking the Slovan job, he gained coaching experience as an assistant at clubs including Olimpik Donetsk, Akhmat Grozny and Standard Liège, as well as working with Tottenham Hotspur’s academy.
Now, barely two months into his first senior managerial appointment, Touré has achieved something that previous African coaches had not.
A Breakthrough for African Coaches.
Nigerian coach Ndubuisi Egbo previously took FK Tirana through the Champions League qualifying rounds in 2020, becoming the first African coach to lead a club in the competition’s qualifying phase. Touré has now gone further by taking Slovan Bratislava into the main league phase.
That distinction matters because African coaches have historically struggled to receive opportunities at major European clubs, particularly compared with former European players moving quickly into senior management.
Touré’s success does not automatically change that landscape, but it provides an important example of what can happen when an African football figure is given a genuine opportunity to lead at the highest level.
Slovan’s Dramatic Route to Europe.
The decisive victory over Celje was anything but straightforward. After the first leg ended 1–1 in Bratislava, Slovan travelled to Slovenia knowing that one mistake could end its Champions League dream.
Andraž Šporar gave Slovan the lead in the 18th minute before Celje equalised through Svit Šešlar from the penalty spot. With the tie level after 90 minutes, the match went into extra time, where Cristian Martínez scored in the 100th minute to send Touré’s team through.
The Bigger Challenge Starts Now.
Qualifying for the league phase is a historic achievement, but Touré’s real managerial examination is only beginning. Slovan Bratislava will now face Europe’s elite, giving the Ivorian an opportunity to test his tactical ideas against some of the continent’s biggest clubs.
For Touré, it is also an opportunity to demonstrate that his coaching career can develop beyond the headline of his playing legacy.
For African football, the significance is even greater. His success provides another argument that African coaches should be judged on their technical ability and results rather than the passport they carry.
Yaya Touré has already opened one important door. The next question is how many African coaches can follow him through it. His Champions League achievement is not simply a personal milestone; it is a powerful statement about the possibilities available to African coaches when they are given meaningful opportunities at the highest level
