The Accra Sports Stadium will not host competitive football until Ghana’s home 2027 AFCON qualifier against The Gambia, with the National Sports Authority (NSA) prioritising the condition of the pitch and preparations required to meet Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards. NSA Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah confirmed the decision on August 31.
The decision directly affects clubs preparing for the start of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season. Several clubs traditionally use the Accra Sports Stadium as their home venue, meaning they must now find alternative stadiums while the facility is preserved for the Black Stars.

The Accra Sports Stadium closure means Ghana Premier League matches will not be played at the venue before the Black Stars’ AFCON qualifier against The Gambia.
Ampofo Ankrah said the decision was necessary to give the stadium sufficient time to undergo preparations and ensure that the pitch meets the standards required by CAF for international football. The NSA wants the Accra Sports Stadium ready before Ghana hosts The Gambia on September 27.

One of the biggest clubs affected is Accra Hearts of Oak, who traditionally play their home matches at the Accra Sports Stadium.
Hearts of Oak have already confirmed temporary arrangements to play their opening home fixtures at the University of Ghana Stadium in Legon. The club will use the alternative venue for its Matchday One and Matchday Three fixtures while the Accra Sports Stadium remains unavailable.
The development creates an unusual situation for the beginning of the Ghana Premier League 2026/27 season, with one of Ghana’s most historic clubs having to relocate because of the national team’s AFCON preparations.
Hearts of Oak are scheduled to begin their league campaign against Berekum Chelsea on September 6.

The decision to protect the Accra Sports Stadium comes as Ghana prepares for a new attempt to return to the Africa Cup of Nations.
The Black Stars will begin their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign away against Côte d’Ivoire on September 24 before returning home to face The Gambia three days later at the Accra Sports Stadium, subject to the venue receiving the required clearance.
Ghana missed the previous AFCON tournament in Morocco, ending the country’s long run of appearances at the continental finals. Qualification for AFCON 2027 has therefore become an important objective for the national team.

For the Ghana Football Association and the National Sports Authority, however, the immediate priority is clear. The Black Stars must have a stadium that satisfies CAF requirements when The Gambia arrives for the 2027 AFCON qualifier.
The decision to sacrifice domestic football at the Accra Sports Stadium is therefore being presented as a necessary short-term measure to protect Ghana’s international football interests.
