Seko Fofana has brought his nine-year international career with Côte d’Ivoire to an end, closing one of the most important chapters of his football life at the age of 31. The Porto midfielder announced his retirement from international football on September 14, saying the time had come to turn the page after representing the Elephants with pride and gratitude. Fofana leaves the national team as an African champion, a World Cup player and one of the midfielders associated with Côte d’Ivoire’s recent resurgence.
The decision comes only months after Fofana represented Côte d’Ivoire at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He featured in two matches as the Elephants reached the round of 32 before being eliminated by Norway. His departure now comes as Côte d’Ivoire prepares to begin another chapter, with the team looking ahead to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.
A Nine-Year Journey Comes to an End.
Fofana made his senior debut for Côte d’Ivoire in November 2017 after representing France at youth level. Over nine years, he accumulated 34 international appearances and scored seven goals, becoming an important presence in the Ivorian midfield alongside players such as Franck Kessié and Jean Michaël Seri.
His international career was not always straightforward. Born in Paris, Fofana had represented France at youth level before choosing to play for the country of his parents. That decision ultimately connected him to one of the most memorable periods in modern Ivorian football.
His farewell message reflected that connection. Fofana thanked his teammates, coaches and supporters and said he would remain the Elephants’ number one fan while expressing confidence in the generation coming through behind him.

It was a tournament that initially appeared to be slipping away from the Elephants. Côte d’Ivoire lost heavily to Equatorial Guinea in the group stage and changed coaches during the competition, with Emerse Faé eventually taking charge.
The team then produced one of the great recoveries in AFCON history, eliminating defending champions Senegal on penalties before overcoming Mali and DR Congo on their way to the final. Fofana contributed at crucial moments, including during the dramatic quarter-final victory over Mali.
For Fofana, lifting the trophy on home soil represented the realisation of a childhood ambition. In his retirement message, he described winning Africa’s biggest international football competition as a dream that had finally come true.

Fofana’s final international tournament was the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Côte d’Ivoire returned to football’s biggest stage. The Elephants progressed to the round of 32, but their campaign ended with a defeat to Norway.
Fofana played twice during the tournament, giving him the opportunity to finish his international career at the highest level of the sport. For a player who had spent almost a decade representing his country, the World Cup provided a fitting final chapter before his decision to step away.

Côte d’Ivoire still possesses considerable talent, however. Simon Adingra, Oumar Diakité, Ibrahim Sangaré and other younger players have already demonstrated their ability to operate at the highest level, while the country’s strong football development system continues to produce new talent.
Fofana himself acknowledged that strength in his farewell message, expressing confidence that the next generation has enough quality to write its own story.

Fofana’s international career may not have produced the number of caps associated with some of Côte d’Ivoire’s most celebrated legends, but its defining moment could hardly have been bigger. He leaves with an Africa Cup of Nations medal earned on home soil, seven international goals and the experience of representing his country at a World Cup.
More importantly, he departs after helping Côte d’Ivoire achieve one of its greatest modern sporting successes. The 2023 AFCON triumph transformed a difficult tournament into a celebration of national football and gave a new generation of Ivorian players their defining memory.
At 31, Fofana still has football ahead of him at club level with Porto. But his international story is now complete.
