Kylian Mbappé has made it clear that the Champions League remains the bigger prize as Real Madrid begin another European campaign, even as his name dominates the conversation surrounding the 2026 Ballon d’Or. The French superstar enters the new season as one of the leading contenders for the individual award after a remarkable campaign, but his own comments suggest that winning major silverware with Madrid remains more important than personal recognition.
Madrid Comes First.
Speaking ahead of Real Madrid’s Champions League opener against Inter Milan, Mbappé emphasised the importance of starting the competition at the Santiago Bernabéu. He described the Champions League as a competition Madrid approach with enormous enthusiasm and determination and stressed that his immediate focus was helping the team win its opening match and begin the European campaign strongly.
That message matters because Mbappé is entering one of the most closely watched periods of his career. After establishing himself as Real Madrid’s attacking focal point, he now faces the expectation that his goals should translate into trophies. The Champions League is therefore not simply another competition for the France captain; it is the tournament most closely associated with Madrid’s identity and his ambitions at the club.

Mbappé’s individual numbers make him one of the leading candidates for the 2026 Ballon d’Or. Real Madrid report that he scored 25 goals in La Liga and 15 in the Champions League during the 2025/26 season before continuing his extraordinary scoring form at the World Cup, where he won the Golden Boot with 10 goals.

Mbappé’s Ballon d’Or ambitions will continue to generate headlines, particularly after his statement that he believes he is the best player in the world. But his immediate message to Madrid supporters is more collective: win matches, win titles and make the Champions League campaign count.
The individual award will ultimately be decided by journalists. The Champions League, however, will be decided on the pitch.
For Mbappé, that distinction may be important. He can discuss the Ballon d’Or, acknowledge that this could be his year and still understand that his strongest route to individual glory may be through collective success.
