Nigeria Heads to BFI London Film Festival as Nollywood Expands Its International Presence.

Nigerian Cinema Takes the International Stage.

Nigerian cinema is set for another major appearance on the international festival circuit, with several Nigerian projects selected for the 70th BFI London Film Festival.

The festival will take place from October 7 to 18, 2026, bringing together 251 films, shorts, series and immersive works from 88 countries.

Three Nigerian Films Selected.

Among the Nigerian titles is The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives, directed by Daniel Oriahi. The film will receive its European premiere at the London festival after previously appearing at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Another Nigerian project, Clarissa, directed by Arie and Chuko Esiri, continues its international festival journey after selections at Cannes, Toronto, Melbourne and the New York Film Festival.

‘Lady’ Enters the First Feature Competition.

Nigerian filmmaker Olive Nwosu will also compete with Lady, a UK-Nigeria production selected for the festival’s First Feature Competition.

The film follows a female taxi driver in Lagos whose life becomes increasingly complicated after she agrees to help a childhood friend who works as a sex worker. It stars Jessica Gabriel’s Ujah, Amanda Oruh and Tinuade Jemiseye.

A Story Rooted in Lagos.

Lady is particularly significant because of its focus on contemporary Lagos and the lives of women navigating difficult social and economic circumstances.

The film is presented primarily in Nigerian Pidgin with English subtitles, giving an international audience an opportunity to experience a distinctly Nigerian linguistic and cultural setting.

Nollywood’s Festival Momentum.

The BFI selections come as Nigerian filmmakers continue to build a stronger presence at major international festivals.

Rather than relying exclusively on commercial Nollywood releases, Nigerian filmmakers are increasingly producing stories that travel through Cannes, Toronto, Sundance, Berlin, London and other international platforms.

From Local Stories to Global Audiences.

The international festival circuit provides more than prestige. It can create opportunities for distribution, international partnerships, sales, financing and conversations around future productions.

For Nigerian filmmakers, international recognition can therefore become an important part of building sustainable careers and taking locally produced stories into new markets.

A Wider African Cinema Movement.

Nigeria’s presence at the BFI London Film Festival also forms part of a broader expansion of African cinema internationally.

African filmmakers are increasingly being represented across major festivals, while international distributors, producers and investors are paying greater attention to stories coming from the continent.

London Offers Another Opportunity.

The 2026 BFI London Film Festival will feature productions from across the world, with major filmmakers and actors also participating in the festival’s Screen Talks programme.

The event will include conversations with international figures such as Ava DuVernay, Sofia Coppola, Cynthia Erivo, Mahershala Ali and Danny Boyle.

Nollywood’s International Ambitions.

For Nigeria, the presence of The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives, Clarissa and Lady represents another step in the industry’s international expansion.

The challenge now is to turn festival visibility into stronger distribution networks, international financing and wider audiences. As Nigerian filmmakers continue to move beyond the traditional Nollywood market, the BFI London Film Festival provides another important platform for showing the world the range and ambition of contemporary Nigerian cinema.
