Tanzania Emerges as East Africa’s Most Represented Country at AFRIMMA 2026.

Tanzania Makes a Strong Statement.

Tanzania is making a major statement at the 2026 African Muzik Magazine Awards, with 11 Tanzanian artists and creatives earning nominations across several categories.

The nominations place Tanzania ahead of its East African neighbours in terms of overall representation and highlight the growing influence of Bongo Flava and other Tanzanian sounds on the continental music scene.

Diamond Platnumz Leads the Charge.

Among the biggest names representing Tanzania is Diamond Platnumz, one of the country’s most internationally recognised artists. He is joined in the Best Male East Africa category by Juma Jux, Marioo, Barnaba and Mbosso.

The category also features major artists from Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia and South Sudan, making it one of the strongest regional contests at this year’s awards.

Strong Representation for Female Artists.

Tanzania’s female artists are also making their presence felt. Zuchu and Abigail Chams have both been nominated in the Best Female East Africa category.

Their inclusion reflects the growing visibility of Tanzanian women in a music market that has traditionally been dominated by male stars. Both artists will compete against nominees from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Ethiopia.

Beyond the Major Categories.

Tanzania’s representation goes beyond its biggest recording artists. Music video director Hanscana has received a nomination for Best Video Director, recognising the country’s growing contribution to music visuals and creative production.

Gospel artists Christina Shusho and Joel Lwaga are also nominated in the Best Gospel category, while dancer Angel Nyigu represents Tanzania in the Best Dancer category.

Bongo Flava Gains More Visibility.

The strong showing comes at a time when Tanzanian music continues to expand beyond its traditional East African audience.

Artists such as Diamond Platnumz, Zuchu, Marioo and Juma Jux have helped push Bongo Flava into wider African and international markets through streaming, collaborations, touring and digital promotion.

Tanzania Challenges the Regional Balance.

AFRIMMA’s nominations also demonstrate that East African music is becoming increasingly competitive on the continental stage. Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Ethiopia have several strong nominees, but Tanzania’s 11 nominations give the country a particularly visible presence.

The development is significant for an industry that has often been overshadowed internationally by Nigeria’s Afrobeats and South Africa’s amapiano.

Nigeria Still Dominates the Wider Race.

Despite Tanzania’s strong performance, Nigeria remains the dominant force in the overall AFRIMMA nominations. Major Nigerian artists including Davido, Burna Boy, Wizkid, Rema, Tems, Asake and Ayra Starr appear across several major categories.

South Africa is also strongly represented, with artists including Tyla, Uncle Waffles, Kabza De Small and DJ Maphorisa among the nominees.

The Awards Are Approaching.

The 2026 AFRIMMA ceremony is scheduled for September 12 in Dallas, Texas, with the event combining awards, live performances and a wider celebration of African music and culture. AFRIMMA has also opened its official fan voting process ahead of the ceremony.

For Tanzania, the nominations provide an opportunity to convert growing regional influence into continental recognition. With artists, producers, directors, gospel performers and dancers all represented, the country’s presence at AFRIMMA 2026 reflects a music industry that is becoming increasingly diverse, ambitious and internationally visible.
