CAF Throws Weight Behind Infantino Amid FIFA Leadership Crisis.

Lanaka Valery

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unanimously reaffirmed its support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino, giving the embattled football leader a major boost as he faces growing opposition from several football bodies over FIFA’s governance.

The endorsement was announced following a CAF Executive Committee meeting in Rabat, Morocco, where Africa’s football leadership pledged its backing for Infantino ahead of FIFA’s presidential election next year. With 54 member associations, CAF represents one of the largest voting blocs within FIFA, making its support politically significant.

Africa Stands Firm

CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe said Africa remains committed to working closely with FIFA and praised Infantino’s contribution to football development across the continent.

Motsepe described Infantino as “a good and loyal friend of Africa” and stressed that the confederation supports reforms through dialogue, transparency and due process rather than political confrontation. Senior African football officials, including Fouzi Lekjaa, Hany Abo Rida, Ahmed Yahya, Hamidou Djibrilla and CAF General Secretary Veron Mosengo-Omba, also expressed confidence in FIFA’s current leadership.

Growing Global Opposition

CAF’s backing comes as UEFA and several other football organisations continue to criticise Infantino over the now-abandoned FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) proposal, which sought to commercialise part of the revenues generated by future FIFA World Cups.

The proposal sparked widespread opposition from football associations, players’ unions and administrators, who argued that it lacked sufficient consultation and raised concerns over transparency and governance.

Following the backlash, FIFA withdrew the proposal, apologised to its member associations and announced a review of its internal decision-making process.

Why Africa’s Support Matters

Africa’s support could prove decisive in the race for FIFA’s presidency.

With 54 voting members, CAF accounts for more than a quarter of FIFA’s 211 national associations, making it one of the most influential confederations in world football.

Analysts believe the endorsement significantly strengthens Infantino’s position as he seeks another term, even as pressure from European football authorities continues to grow.

Football Governance Under the Spotlight

The controversy has reignited debate over how world football should be governed.

Supporters argue that Infantino has expanded investment in football development, particularly in emerging regions such as Africa. Critics, however, are calling for greater transparency, stronger institutional oversight and broader consultation before major commercial decisions are made.

The disagreement has highlighted growing divisions between FIFA’s continental confederations over the future direction of global football governance.

Looking Ahead

As preparations begin for FIFA’s next presidential election, CAF’s unanimous endorsement provides Gianni Infantino with valuable political momentum.

Whether that support will be enough to overcome opposition from Europe and other football stakeholders remains uncertain, but Africa has made its position clear.

For now, the continent’s football leaders are standing firmly behind the FIFA president as one of the biggest governance debates in modern football continues to unfold.
