Airtel Uganda has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the country’s digital transformation following high-level discussions with the Ministry of Information, Communications Technology and National Guidance. The telecommunications company announced plans to continue investing in network expansion, digital innovation, and financial technology as Uganda accelerates efforts to build a more connected digital economy.
The commitment was made during a meeting between ICT Minister Dr. Chris Baryomunsi and Airtel Uganda Managing Director Soumendra Sahu, where both parties discussed expanding broadband access, improving digital services, and supporting the government’s Digital Uganda Vision.
Expanding Connectivity Across Uganda
Airtel Uganda said it will continue investing in its telecommunications infrastructure to improve network quality and expand internet access to underserved communities.
The company plans to strengthen its 4G and 5G networks, increase broadband coverage, and enhance service reliability as demand for high-speed internet continues to grow across the country.
Improved connectivity is expected to benefit schools, healthcare facilities, businesses, government institutions, and rural communities by providing faster and more reliable access to digital services.
Supporting Uganda’s Digital Economy
During the meeting, Airtel Uganda reaffirmed its support for the government’s strategy to develop a modern digital economy.
The company highlighted its investments in mobile broadband, cloud-based services, enterprise connectivity, and digital financial solutions aimed at improving access to technology for individuals and businesses.
Officials noted that stronger digital infrastructure is essential for economic growth, innovation, entrepreneurship, and job creation as Uganda continues its digital transformation journey.
Mobile Money Remains a Priority
Airtel Uganda also emphasised the importance of expanding digital financial services through Airtel Money, one of the country’s leading mobile payment platforms.
The company said it will continue improving secure digital payment solutions that enable customers to transfer money, pay bills, receive salaries, and conduct business transactions electronically.
Government officials welcomed these efforts, saying digital financial services have become an important driver of financial inclusion, particularly for people living in rural communities without access to traditional banking services.
Government Welcomes Private Sector Investment
The Ministry of ICT praised Airtel Uganda for its continued investment in the country’s telecommunications sector.
Minister Dr. Chris Baryomunsi said collaboration between government and private sector operators is essential to achieving Uganda’s long-term digital development goals. He encouraged continued investment in broadband infrastructure, digital literacy, cybersecurity, and emerging technologies that can improve public service delivery and economic competitiveness.
The government also reiterated its commitment to creating a favourable regulatory environment that encourages innovation while protecting consumers.
Digital Transformation Gains Momentum
Uganda has made significant progress in expanding internet access over the past decade, driven by increased investment from mobile network operators and technology companies.
The government continues to promote digitalisation across key sectors including education, healthcare, agriculture, commerce, and public administration through initiatives aimed at improving connectivity and expanding online services.
Industry analysts believe continued investment by operators such as Airtel Uganda will play a critical role in achieving universal internet access and supporting the country’s growing digital economy.
