2025 AFCON Title Remains Uncertain as CAF Awaits CAS Ruling on Morocco Senegal Final Dispute.

The fate of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title remains unresolved after CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe confirmed that the trophy will not be officially awarded until the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne, Switzerland, delivers its final ruling on the dispute surrounding the tournament final between Morocco and Senegal.

Speaking on the matter, Motsepe stated that the title remains pending until the legal process is completed, stressing that CAF will respect and implement whatever decision is issued by CAS.

“The 2025 AFCON title remains pending the final CAS decision on the dispute arising from the final between Morocco and Senegal,” Motsepe said.

The statement has created further uncertainty around one of African football’s biggest competitions, as fans and football authorities await clarity on the outcome of the case.

CAF Commits to Respecting CAS Decision

Dr. Motsepe emphasised that CAF will fully comply with the ruling from the world’s highest sporting arbitration body.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport, based in Lausanne, Switzerland, handles disputes involving international sports organisations, federations, athletes and clubs. Its decisions are considered final and binding for parties involved.

By referring the matter to CAS, CAF has placed the final decision outside its own disciplinary structures, allowing an independent body to review the circumstances surrounding the dispute.

The CAF president’s position indicates that the organisation intends to avoid any perception of bias and allow the legal process to determine the final outcome.

A Controversial AFCON Final

The dispute follows the dramatic final between Morocco and Senegal, two of Africa’s strongest football nations.

Both teams entered the match with high expectations. Morocco were looking to secure a historic AFCON triumph on home soil, while Senegal were aiming to strengthen their reputation as one of the continent’s most successful football nations after their previous continental success.

However, events surrounding the final created controversy, leading to formal complaints and the eventual involvement of CAS.

The details of the dispute remain at the centre of the legal proceedings, with CAF waiting for the arbitration process to conclude before recognising an official champion.

Morocco and Senegal Await Final Verdict

For both nations, the CAS decision carries major sporting significance.

Morocco has invested heavily in football development in recent years, building one of Africa’s strongest football infrastructures and achieving historic performances at international level, including reaching the 2022 FIFA World Cup semi-finals.

Senegal, meanwhile, has established itself as a continental powerhouse, winning the 2021 AFCON title and producing a golden generation of players competing at the highest level of world football.

The uncertainty surrounding the 2025 AFCON title means both countries must wait before knowing how history will record the tournament.

What This Means for African Football

The situation highlights the growing importance of governance, transparency and legal processes in modern African football.

As African football continues to attract greater global attention, competitions are facing increased scrutiny from fans, players, federations and international stakeholders.

Disputes involving major tournaments can affect the reputation of competitions, making clear rules and independent decision-making increasingly important.

CAF’s decision to await the CAS ruling demonstrates the changing nature of football administration, where sporting decisions are increasingly connected to legal frameworks and arbitration processes.

A Decision That Could Shape AFCON History

The final CAS ruling will determine whether the 2025 AFCON title remains with the team currently recognised as the winner or whether changes will be made based on the findings of the arbitration panel.

Until then, African football remains on standby.

For Morocco, Senegal and millions of supporters across the continent, the wait continues for an official conclusion to one of the most debated AFCON finals in recent history.

The next chapter of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations story will not be written on the pitch, but in a courtroom in Lausanne.
